Fireworks are normally reserved for the Fourth of July and New Year’s Day, but thanks to a new state law, Walker County residents will be able to enjoy them on the most important day in Texas history.
The Walker County Commissioners Court on Monday unanimously approved the sale of fireworks in the county for Texas Independence Day, which is also Sam Houston’s birthday. Vendors will be able to sell fireworks outside the city limits beginning Feb. 25 and running until midnight on March 2.
“I think that it’s great,” County Judge Danny Pierce said. “Fireworks are a main form of celebration. I’m in favor of it being a Texan and all, living here, serving here. It’s very appropriate that Walker County residents be allowed to celebrate Texas Independence Day with fireworks.”
Counties have to adopt the statute before Feb. 15 each year to allow the sale of fireworks for the March 2 holiday. The new law also gives counties the option to allow fireworks to be sold on San Jacinto Day (April 1), Cinco de Mayo (May 5) and Memorial Day (last Monday in May).
The Commissioners Court can void the order and ban the sale of fireworks for Texas Independence Day if the county is experiencing drought conditions at that time.
“This is something that has never been done before and we decided it would benefit the county,” Pierce added. “In the past, fireworks could only be sold on July Fourth, Christmas and New Year’s. Hopefully our citizens will enjoy this new option.”
